Microsoft Corporation Senior Data Engineer, Threat Intelligence in Redmond, Washington

Do you understand the importance of effective data and analytical models in Intelligence Lifecyle? Have you seen how too much data can be a problem for Intelligence teams? The Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center (MSTIC) is looking for a Data Analyst with the right mix of cyber security knowledge, threat intelligence experience, data processing, and data modeling skills to help empower MSTIC’s analysts and systems to discover, track, and disrupt the world’s most dangerous cyber threats. As a data engineer in MSTIC, you will work closely with threat intelligence analysts, data engineers, and developers to correctly aggregate, normalize, and ultimately model massive datasets. You’ll make big data useful for MSTIC and its partners.

Responsibilities

  • Create, maintain, and optimize data processing jobs that transform unwieldy raw data into datasets which are more useful threat intelligence analysts and systems.

  • Develop and implement data models that support threat intelligence analysis and reporting. Write ingestion jobs which transform raw data into these data models.

  • Perform data analysis and visualization using various tools and techniques, such as KQL, Python, Power BI, etc.

  • Identify and communicate data insights, trends, patterns, and anomalies that support threat intelligence objectives and priorities.

  • Collaborate with other data analysts, threat analysts, engineers, and researchers to share data knowledge, best practices, and feedback.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience with defining and extending data models for the cyber threat domain.

  • Experience with working in the Cyber Threat Intelligence domain, as an analyst or a builder.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Knowledge and skills in data processing, data modeling, data quality, and data visualization.

  • Experience utilizing graph-based intelligence systems (including hypergraph), such as Synapse by The Vertex Project, preferred.

  • Proficient in KQL (or equivalent) and at least one scripting language, such as Python, R, etc. - Experience with cloud-based data platforms and services, such as Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Azure Synapse, etc.

  • Understands the relationship between a data model and an analytical model.

  • Understanding of cyber security concepts, such as threat actors, attack vectors, indicators of compromise, etc.

  • Communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
